Care With a Side of Hospitality: Banquet Department Organizes Thanksgiving Food Drive.

When Jennifer Heath passed away in Dec. 2010, the Banquet Department at Embassy Suites Detroit — Southfield, MI, swore they’d honor the memory of their caring, and selfless teammate. The Banquet Department threw their efforts into making a difference and participated in a list of charities, such as Susan G. Koman, Taking Strides for Autism and serving meals at children’s hospitals.

With Jenn’s memory in mind and their charitable habits in place, the Banquet Department took ownership and created a Thanksgiving Food Drive. The problem solvers aimed to collect enough money and donations to build 200 box meals to hand out at nearby Westvaco Park, a common venue for charities.

Donations flooded in. Hotel associates gave food while friends, families, clientele and hotel vendors donated money. Fifteen team members crowded together the day before Thanksgiving to stuff more than 300 boxes with their traditional Thanksgiving menu:

  • Sliced turkey breast
  • Mashed potatoes topped with brown gravy
  • Traditional stuffing
  • Pumpkin pie or apple pie
  • Soft drinks, iced tea, fruit punch, hot coffee or a water bottle

The team handed out meals from 11 A.M. until 3 P.M. Afterward, handed out leftover meals door-to-door in surrounding neighborhoods. The community was overwhelmed by the difference the Banquet Department made.

We’re sure Jennifer Heath is just as proud.
