To you, what makes Catch Me important? That’s what we asked Diana Bernardo of Hampton Inn & Suites Ephrata – Mountain Springs, PA, and got this great response:
“I cannot ‘briefly’ tell you the importance of a catch, but I will try. Since Catch Me is done during the summer – typically the busiest times for many hotels – it is easy to get caught up in the ‘job’ and not take time out for thank you’s. The catches get distributed to everyone’s mailbox (yes, everyone has a mailbox!) and it just is like MAGIC – they start their day feeling appreciated and it’s an instant pick me up. Once Team Members start to see the catches rolling in for them, they are naturally inspired to make someone ELSE’S day, in an organic game of pay-it-forward. And enthusiasm breeds enthusiasm. Like Proverbs 11:25 says, ‘When you refresh others, you yourself will be refreshed’ – it’s just a feel good thing to give AND get. Even an engaged team needs a little nudge (see raffle idea below) but now they are all trying to out-decorate one another and the catches are rolling in like thunder.
One of the saddest things I ever heard was a hotel manager tell me they didn’t participate in Catch Me because people write ‘dumb’ catches. I don’t care if you write a catch to tell someone you like the earrings they wore to work – it’s a chance to CONNECT and brighten someone’s day, and there are no rules when it comes to smiles. So I would encourage everyone to just let their Team Members make the catches, and don’t demotivate them for doing so, or else you defeat the whole purpose of the program.
Our team looks forward to Catch Me – but it does require an initial investment in time. Don’t just sit out the box and cards and think that magic will happen. Incentivize your team (last night I just put out a memo with 5 blank cards attached, and told everyone if they all filled them out I would have a raffle at the end of the month for fun prizes).”
Perfectly put, Diana! Diana’s team is taking Catch Me to a new level in several ways. She’s also challenged her team to BLING their catches—and gotten some amazing results!
