If there were a holiday created especially for us, World Kindness Day would be it. Rich with history, the November 13 holiday is an opportunity for every single person around the world to step up and show extra kindness.
We know, we know—at Hilton Worldwide, EVERY DAY might as well be World Kindness Day. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a little extra fun on November 13. Here are a few thought starters to help you make World Kindness Day extra special in your hotel:
Show your team they’re one of a kind… By making these fun name acronyms for each teammate! Using the letters in their first name, come up with adjectives that describe your Team Member and what makes them unique or special.
Find out what kind … Of recognition your team prefers. Time and again, we’ve found that recognition is most effective when it’s tailored to the teammate. A Team Member who bikes to work shouldn’t be recognized with a gas card. Similarly, shy teammates might shirk from too much attention. The week leading up to World Kindness Day, get to know each and every teammate by having one-on-one chats with them. What you learn may surprise you!
Be kind … By giving a compliment. A compliment is the ultimate form of recognition: Fast, free, and highly effective. Give each Team Member a specific compliment. Instead of saying, “You did a great job today,” say, “Ariel, I really appreciate how you learn each guest’s name. Mr. Hamilton always feels like a VIP when you check him in.”
Spread kindness … By asking each Team Member to bring in a (gently used!) copy of their favorite book. Donate the books to a local library or elementary school. Or even better, invite school children to the hotel and have a Team Member read to them.
